Democracy Now! | Crawford Vigil Is Not OverExclusive Interview with Cindy Sheehan After Mother's Stroke: "I Want to Get Back As Soon As Possible"

Democracy Now! | Crawford Vigil Is Not OverExclusive Interview with Cindy Sheehan After Mother's Stroke: "I Want to Get Back As Soon As Possible": "Cindy Sheehan had to leave Crawford temporarily after her mother suffered a stroke. She spoke with Democracy Now! in the airport on her way to Los Angeles. She said that also she left her vigil without meeting with President Bush, she said, 'This Camp Casey movement is bigger than me. It's growing, it's bigger than any of us.'
Cindy Sheehan went on, 'I believe that it is my right and responsibility as an American to question our government when our government is wrong. I'm not one of the immature patriots who say my country right or wrong because my country is wrong now, and my country-the policies of my country are responsible for killing tens of thousands of innocent people, and I won't stand by and let that happen anymore.' WATCH VIDEO: Something's In the Air But It's Not on the Airwaves

Something's In the Air But It's Not on the Airwaves: "There's Something in the Air / But It's Not on the Airwaves"

The film, “There’s Something In the Air/But It’s Not on the Airwaves,” is based on an audio piece by political spoken word artist Chris Chandler about the media’s lack of coverage on the peace and global justice movement. The loss of so many Ohio servicemen during the shooting of the film is providing inspiration for the cast and crew. The film was shot on location in Kent and Akron, Ohio and includes documentary footage from many independent videographers from across the country. The film also includes footage shot inside a paddy wagon during an actual arrest in Kent, Ohio on May 4, 2003, when the police confiscated a protestor’s video camera, left it on, and later gave it back to him.

CBS News | Anti-War Mom Leaves Camp | August 18, 200519:07:52

CBS News | Anti-War Mom Leaves Camp | August 18, 200519:07:52: "The grieving woman who started an anti-war demonstration near President Bush's ranch nearly two weeks ago left the camp Thursday after learning her mother had had a stroke, but she told supporters the protest would go on.

Cindy Sheehan told reporters she had just received the phone call and was leaving immediately to be with her 74-year-old mother at a Los Angeles hospital.

'I'll be back as soon as possible if it's possible,' she said. After hugging some of her supporters, Sheehan and her sister, Deedee Miller, got in a van and left for the Waco airport about 20 miles away"

Is Sheehan a Spark or a Flicker?

Is Sheehan a Spark or a Flicker?: "Is Cindy Sheehan the spark igniting an antiwar movement that threatens the Bush presidency? Or is she just an over-hyped flicker that will be extinguished with the next turn of the news cycle?
The White House is counting on it being the latter. As the Washington Post's Jim VandeHei explained in a Live Online discussion yesterday: 'The White House thinks this whole story is a silly obsession of bored reporters with nothing better to do during the slow August.'

But with more than a thousand Sheehan-inspired vigils all over the country last night -- and a national conversation unleashed -- there are reasons to think the White House may be wrong.

A Conversation

Joe Garofoli writes in the San Francisco Chronicle: 'Vacaville resident Cindy Sheehan camped out near President Bush's vacation ranch in Crawford, Texas, in the hope of inspiring a national conversation about the war."

Orbis - David Rovics: Leftist folk singer/songwriter

Orbis - David Rovics: Leftist folk singer/songwriter: "Considered by many to be the last protest singer, it's been said that if Dubya had his way, David Rovics would be locked up in Guantanamo Bay.

After falling in love with David at show at Bongo Java, we were able to catch up with him on the phone for an interview.

Orbis:So where did you grow up?
DR: I was born in New York City and grew up in the woodsy republican New York suburb of Wilton, Connecticut.

O:Have you always been a leftist folk singer? How did you get into music? Politics?
DR: My parents are both classical musicians, so that was a beginning for me.
They're also politically progressive, so there's that, too. But there were lots of other influences on both accounts, including a camp I went to as a kid, where there was a lot of political overtones going on, with the anti-nuke movement. It was called Rowe Camp, and there was a nuclear reactor in town...

O:Biggest influences, heroes? (Musical or otherwise)
DR: Biggest musical influences would be folks like Jim Page and Phil Ochs, but lots of others, too. Other than music, biggest influences would have to include folks like Karl Marx, Subcommandante Marcos and my mother."
