USATODAY.com - America isn't filmmaker's punching bag

USATODAY.com - Coming attractions: "If Michael Moore's political tinderbox Fahrenheit 9/11 is too hot for you to handle, there is a kinder, gentler portrait of the USA opening a week later on July 2 that may be more to your liking.
America's Heart & Soul, a collection of 24 vignettes about average Janes and Joes exercising their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, is the dream project of Louis Schwartzberg. 'It's been in my head for 15 years,' says the cinematographer, 55. As he traveled around the country to shoot promos for local newscasts, 'it got me to appreciate the diversity of America.'

While Heart & Soul is uplifting, especially when soaring with a female aerobatic flier from St. Augustine, Fla., it doesn't ignore hardships. The filmmaker points to the Chicago ex-con turned Olympic boxer devoted to keeping kids off the streets. 'We go from the peak of Mount Everest to the rough Tenderloin district of San Francisco,' he says. 'From the top to the pit.' "
