The morning commute. Washington's subway system was jammed earlier with a mix of working stiffs who'd left their cars at home and Republican faithful wearing "Bush/Cheney" pins and red-white-and-blue scarves. There was such a crush of people that riders who managed to squeeze their way into a subway car were squashed flat against the doors, like bugs against a windshield. At one downtown stop, the train was too full to allow hundreds of people to board. "People, please, please, please, the doors are closing!" pleaded the conductor. The crowding was compounded by many riders' unfamiliarity with public transit.
